The World Cinema series continues at The Strand Theatre in Hudson Falls on Thursday June 27th at 7pm with a FREE screening of Akira Kurosawa's action/adventure masterpiece, "The Hidden Fortress"!

When I was in my early 20's I really started to get into "World Cinema". Working part time at a video store helped with this journey. One filmmaker that really stood out was Akira Kurosawa. I had finished watching "Seven Samurai", "Yojimbo", "Sanjuro", etc. When I saw "The Hidden Fortress" was a inspiration for George Lucas when he came up with the "Star Wars" concept. Lucas was a huge Kurosawa fan and later on would help fund Kurosawa's later projects. "The Hidden Fortress" is such an incredible and rousing adventure! It's easy to see why filmmakers were heavily influenced by Kurosawa's cinema!

There are many similarities between "The Hidden Fortress" and "Star Wars"! Both films have the story being told from the lowliest characters (The peasants and the droids), There's the rebel princess factor, the samurai general and Obi-Wan Kenobi, etc. If you watch the fights, Lucas paid homage during the lightsaber duels in "Star Wars"!
