I love cinema and discussing movies. I chuckle at articles like this one: The 25 most overrated films ranked! Click here to browse the list! I disagree with so many films on this list! They're entitled to their own opinions. There's no right or wrong answer to our opinions.
I said to myself: "What the heck"! Here's my list of "Overrated Films":
"Avatar"- Yes, this film was visually stunning (especially on the big screen), but story is bloated and overlong & it was done so much better with Kevin Costner's "Dances With Wolves".
"The Hangover"- (Or any contemporary screwball, gross out comedy) To be fair, some of the jokes & bits near the beginning were not too bad, but this quickly runs out of steam. I don't understand why these comedies can't keep the momentum going all the way to the finish line, but this seems par the course for not just the "Hangover" films but most contemporary comedies.
"Blade Runner 2049"- This movie bombed at the box office, but the online "cinephiles" really love this film. It left me scratching my head why? Yes it's a visually stunning & superb sounding film, but for this film to reach such an obvious conclusion (and take almost three hours to get there!???) just makes me wonder what people actually see in this film other than the superb visuals, sound, music and technical elements.
"Donnie Darko"- This is another film that has a HUGE cult following. I totally get the film and to be fair it has a creative story. I just didn't care for how it was executed. I'm not sure if another draft of the script or a different filmmaker & cast would've helped, but I just could not get into this film. I did try this twice by the way!
"Zodiac" I never have an issue with a film's length, but this is another film where the conclusion was obvious and it churned along for over 2.5 hours! It was a sluggish film for me and made want to seek out a documentary! The online film community loves this film though!
"Interstellar"- Christopher Nolan's films are all technically amazing! From the visuals, sound and performances. He does though have a tendency not to trust his audience and over explain the story. Too much of EVERYTHING! Many loved this film, but I was not one of them! Visuals, technical aspects and awesome performances (especially by Matthew McConaughey) can only take a film so far when the script and story suffers from overload!
"Forrest Gump"- Now I do like the technical aspects of this film and the story itself is interesting but the filmmaker, Robert Zemeckis has a tendency of taking a good thing too far. The film feels longer than it is & I think Tom Hanks is one of the most overrated actors! His accent is terrible and grates on my nerves! It sounds like he's trying too hard! I've heard the person of whom he based his accent on and it doesn't sound natural! I'm clearly in the minority because this film is beloved by a great deal of our society!
"Joker"- This is one film on their list that I totally agree with! This film left such a bad taste in my mouth. It was a bad combo of "Taxi Driver" & "King Of Comedy" (those films I love). Joaquin Phoenix cannot be faulted though. He is absolutely unforgettable! I just wish I enjoyed the film like everyone else. I've seen this type of film before and it was executed so much better than this!
"The MCU"- The Marvel Cinematic Universe played it's course after 2014's "Guardians Of The Galaxy"! These are not films but long, drawn out episodes on the big screen in my opinion. Even the visuals aren't stunning! Some of these "films" look cheap! The Marvel Cinematic Universe has become a product that teases the next one, the next one, etc. Technically all sequels are like this to a certain degree but this universe has grown tired in my opinion! The same could be said for the DC cinematic universe as well!
"Shawshank Redemption"- Another film on the list! To be fair this film is more overhyped than overrated. It's not a bad film to be fair. When a good chunk of people say: "Greatest film ever"! I just shake my head. It feels too long and it leads to such an obvious conclusion. There are no surprises! Not a terrible ending, but certainly not the greatest ending! IF Morgan Freeman & James Whitmore were NOT in this film, it would NOT be watchable!!!
There are many other films that leave me shaking my head, but these are the one off the top of my head!
Feel free to share the films you feel are overrated!
