In 2024 I’d never thought I’d be excited for a film starring Demi Moore & Dennis Quaid! Yet, here we are!

Relatively new filmmaker, Coralie Fargeat has given us one of the most interesting & disturbing films of the year! "The Substance" stars Demi Moore (in a tour-de-force performance) as an aging actress who's fired from her fitness TV show on her 50th birthday. She's in a car accident as she sees her billboard taken down and at the hospital she's handed a flash drive labeled: "The Substance". She watches the video on the flash drive which is an ad for this special serum, that once injected, promised to create a "younger, more perfect version" of the user all the while they are both still  connected. Well, after some hesitation on her part, she decides to go through with the procedure and injects herself with the "Activator" serum! Then a younger version of herself is "born" through a slit in her back! Woah!

I will not reveal anymore of the plot as I don't want to spoil it for anyone. Let's just say this is a "heavy duty" film to say the least. If you're a fan of satire or this type of horror known as "Body Horror", then you'll be somewhat prepared. If you are not used to this type of cinema, then proceed with caution as this film is not for the squeamish or faint hearted. Some of the audience left the theater during certain sequences of the film. If you do stick with it, it is a very rewarding (yet disturbing) film experience.
