As you probably know...Sammy Hagar and Loverboy are performing at SPAC on July 22,,,but did you know that one of his biggest hits was written in this area. Sammy used to own a vacation cabin near Lake Placid and late one night back around 1984 when the highway speed limit was actually 55 miles per hour....Sammy had flown into Albany and rented a car for the two and a half hour ride to Lake Placid. Sammy was driving on the Northway late at night traveling at the speed of 62 miles per hour when he was pulled over. To say the least...He was annoyed...and when the cop told him that they pulled people over in that particular county once they hit a speed of 60 miles per hour... Sammy responded to him that " I can't drive 55"!!! The cop took Sammy's license back to his car...and while the cop was writing the ticket...Sammy wrote out the lyrics to "I Can't Drive 55" in his rental car! One of Sammy's biggest hits...the track appeared on his record "VOA" which was released in July, 1984....
Sammy Hagar and the song "I Can't Drive 55"....
